Could Mark Zuckerberg be more admired than his counterpart at Apple?

Who would win in a fight between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell?

We might never know who has the better left hook, but industry watcher CB Insights is pitting Bezos, Newell and a whole mess of other tech founders and CEOs against each other for the title of "most admired" in a bracket-style face-off.

Voting for round one starts Tuesday and the competition will wrap up November 15. CB Insights told CNET it put together the full spread of founders and CEOs by tracking media mentions using the firm's own trends tool. The bracket challenge might just be a matter of curiosity. CB Insights isn't offering a reward for correct brackets, except for a shoutout in its newsletter.

The initial round includes big names like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Marissa Mayer, Tim Cook and Satya Nadella. You'll also run into techies who keep a lower profile, like Spotify's Daniel Ek and Oracle's Safra Catz.

Members of the tech crowd are no strangers to competitive rankings. They regularly show up on lists like Forbes' roundup of billionaires (Gates, Bezos, Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison are all in the top 10). Companies like Apple, HP and Amazon turned up on the latest Fortune 500. And speaking of Apple, Forbes lists it as the world's most valuable brand.

Tech has no shortage of rivalries, either, whether it's Mac versus PC or Uber versus Lyft. This bracket challenge manages to avoid any particularly heated pairings -- at least for now.

CB Insights did a similar bracket competition earlier in the year, asking which investor readers would most want to participate in Series A funding -- that is, a startup's first big round of raising money. Andreessen Horowitz took the top honor, besting firms like 500 Startups and Founders Fund.
