The newest place to stream live video is... Kickstarter?

The crowdfunding site on Tuesday launched Kickstarter Live, a way for campaigns to stream live video as they fundraise.

The live video platform has been in a beta test for a few months. So far, Kickstarter pages have used the tool to stream demos of the products they plan to make, performances of the art projects they're crowdfunding and countdowns to the end of a Kickstarter campaign, among other events. The platform intends to increase real-time community engagement.

Like Facebook Live and other live streaming options, Kickstarter Live includes real-time comments and options for viewers to take other actions (like backing a campaign) while watching.

"The key to Kickstarter Live is its intimacy. It brings creators and the people supporting them right into the same room together. And it encourages personal connection," Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler wrote in a blog post. "Viewers can ask questions, chat, send selfies, select rewards, and back the project — all while tuned in."

Kickstarter launched in 2009 and since then has funded 114,370 projects, the site says. Kickstarter backers have pledged $2.7 billion in total.

Now the site joins the trend of live-streaming everything from presidential debates to shopping.

Kickstarter is the first crowdfunding site to add a live video component.
